I bagged my first Dove on 1 September 1962 while hunting with my father on our family farm west of Portland, Kansas in Sumner County. I continued to hunt doves for about the next 15 years. After my parents sold the farm and as I became more and more involved with my teaching duties and other projects my hunting days ended.

Now that I am retired from teaching and have more time for myself I hope to get back to some of the things I enjoyed while growing up in rural southern Kansas.

Thus, I decided to celebrate the opening day of Dove Season 2012 by hunting doves on the property my wife and I own south of Topeka. It had been 50 years since my first dove hunt and about 35 years since my last. The hunt brought back many wonderful memories!

Also, it was the first hunt for our nine year old Golden Retriever, Halley. It only took finding the first downed bird for her to understand what was expected of her. She did great, and by the end of the hunt we had enough doves for a future evening meal.
